Welcome to the PTW stage, South Africa’s Windybrow Arts Centre, located in the densely populated, poor, and vibrant Hillbrow neighborhood of Johannesburg. We will get closer to their powerful work transforming the impact of colonial and apartheid legacies.
We are particularly excited to create a unique dialogue between Windybrow’s youth and American university students from the Honor’s College at UNC, Greensboro. What a beautiful opportunity to be part of a conversation with these young people.
Associated with the world-famous Market Theatre, discover its cultural impact on thousands of people with free performance and other arts programming, generating a rainbow of socially engaged plays, performance pieces, music and street theatre.
This session will be hosted by Stacy Hardy, Chair of the Creative Writing Department at the University of the Witwatersrand and one of the young artists involved in the project, Thabang Lucky Matsau. You will get to experience “Notebook of a Long Day’s Journey into Hillbrow Night,” a collaborative poem / performance by Windybrow’s young people, who call themselves “Césaire Youth.” Inspired by Martinican poet, playwright and politician Aimé Césaire’s 1939 seminal work, Notebook of a Return to the Native Land, the performance will be followed by a public discussion with students from Lloyd International Honors College, University of North Carolina, Greensboro.
